Grapat has grown a lot since its birth in 2015, has spread to 62 countries worldwide and needs more and more production space every year, but it is still - and always will be - a family project. Grapat began to take shape as an idea after the birth of the first child, Lola. They realized that you don't need any ready-made toys to play, but use your ingenuity to transform everyday objects into whatever you want them to be. When they saw how happy she was, they realized that being present, observing her needs, and offering everyday items was what really mattered. After the birth of their second child, Tomàs, they moved from the big city to the countryside. In the former home of Jordi's family, they were able to integrate the slower lifestyle they wanted.
They started creating, playing with wood, and slowly but surely, the family home turned into a fully functional workshop. The pieces are made with machines installed in the barn, where a donkey lived years ago, and painted by hand with old sheets in the kitchen, where Jordi's grandmother used to cook delicious meals.
Grapat means "handful" in Catalan, and this is exactly where the simple idea behind this modest project comes from: we take a handful of loose pieces in our hands with the greatest possible care and give them to the children with the same love.
